See the 1969 Judge movie called "Sex Drive"

Review by Sean Mattingly, webmaster of UltimateGTO.com

I just came back from watching "Sex Drive" [TRAILER HERE], the new movie that showcases a Carousel Red 1969 GTO Judge. Unlike most modern flicks that have a muscle car in them, this movie actually SHOWS the muscle car throughout.

This is not your typical review, poring over such boring things as the director's name or his credentials. The movie basically stars a teenage punk what's-his-name and his big bully brother who-cares-what-his-name-was. For me, the movie experience was all about the CAR! As soon as little brother gets his hands on the keys, the hilarity ensues.

The little brother and his friend and some black-haired chick with annoyingly crooked teeth head for a road trip. The car is an object of desire on a trip to get laid. Sounds like a few dates I've had. All the while, you know the movie teens will have the typical adventure elements thrown their way. There's the engine-revving, the speeding, some wreckless driving, avoiding roadside obstacles, hitting a possum. There's even a scene with the Judge driving crazy through a cornfield.

Hardcore Judge fanatics won't be disappointed by this movie. You get to see the full exterior of the car often. There are many interior scenes as well, showing off the black Morrokide and the lovely black headliner. The hood tach is shown briefly as the engine revs. Even the engine compartment is seen, with all the main characters "working" on the car to try and solve an overheating problem by pissing in the radiator. Really? Really. As far as the soundtrack of the vintage Judge, I found all the engine sounds unsatisfying. It didn't sound like a Pontiac engine to me. The car had the sound of what might have been the soundman's 1980's truck with a bad muffler. Big whoop.

Like any muscle car romp at the hands of an inexperienced teenager, there is bound to be some damage that made me cringe. They drove the car across some medians at high speed. They did a little jump out of a field that got air and landed the Judge on a country road with surprisingly no visual damages. The heartbreaker was near the end when the Judge gets "tapped" in the door by a dumbass Larry The Cable Guy-type dude driving a pickup truck into the side of it. Never fear, the car gets fixed in the end.

If you're looking to judge the Judge's factory correctness, you have plenty of opportunities to look at this shiny orange car. All that bugged me was the grille. Rather than being painted black, it seemed to be a silvery gray. In one shot under the hood, it appeared that the radiator hose was held on by an oversize adaptor hose of some sort. The underside of the hood was not painted black as I think it should have been. It was Carousel Red. If you can spot other non-factory irregularities, please comment below.

Here's how I rate "Sex Drive". It gets 5 stars out of 5 for muscle car content. It ranks even higher because in some scenes, they leave a foreign tuner car playing the fool. I give it 5 stars for raunchy sex jokes (like Porky's) and dirty sight gags and a required flash of boobs. Brief, but nice boobs! I would have deducted a few stars if they had treated the car badly. Throughout the movie, I suspected it would be driven off a cliff and/or blown up at the end. Not so. Whew! This is a must-see movie for muscle car fans. Round up you car club buddies and go see it.

12 year anniversary of UltimateGTO.com

In the early days of the internet, there was not much to look at. Searching for GTOs online, there were just a few guys that had figured out how to scan a photo and post it to an ISP's personal web space. My, how we have grown since 1996!

UltimateGTO.com started out as a personal page on a local Indianapolis-area ISP called Iquest. At that time the website began being called "The Ultimate GTO Picture Site". Because of the long name, some people abbreviated that TUGTOPS. It was primarily a place for photos of the 1968 and 1969 GTO. Then it expanded to cover all years of GTOs, Lemans, Tempest, etc. Later, the website moved to its own server and got its own URL of UltimateGTO.com.

In the summer of 2008, during the 12-year anniversary, I asked visitors on the main page of UltimateGTO.com to tell me how many years they've been visiting.

Eric Tewald was first to respond,
"I've been visiting this site for just over 11 years. I discovered it my junior year in high school and it's been my home page since I got out of the Army and got my first laptop. Nothing like opening the web and seeing what the news feed on your site has added. Keep up the good work and keep the pics rolling."

Steven Whatley responded, attaching a photo of his car,
"I found the website in 2000. I visit it daily (when at work.....lol)"

Keith Maher was next, reminding me to post his newest photos,
"I have been here since posting my 2005 gto in the year 2006. Now just waitiing for my new post to show GTO 2006 sent in last month.Great site."

Timster said,
"Sean, congratulations on your 12 years! I have been using your web site for 5 years. Strong work!"

Pat Lehouillier (aka goat_nut) wrote in,
"I purchased my car in 2001 so I have been here at least that long. Great sight. It's good to see there are so many GTO/Lemans/Tempest fans out there. I'll be here as long as the sight is up. Keep up the good work."

Jeff Klein, my primary website helper sent a note,
"10 years for me. Found the site in 1998 and started helping late in 1999. Didn't really get good programs working well until 2001 when we got all the years thumbnailed and databased. Early on, only the 68 and 69 model years had thumbnails. We had about 4,000 pictures once they were all thumbnailed. Now we have 4x that. What a trip it has been."

Bill sent in a photo of his car and a quick note,
"10 Years. Keep up the great work!"

Thanks to website visitors contributing photographs of their cars, the website will continue to grow. Sometime this year, we'll hit 16,000 photos - all indexed and searchable by year, color, options, etc.

Which type of car wax is best?

Ever wonder which car waxes make the grade and which don't? Or if, in fact, a car wax is really necessary for that sparkling shine? A recent study by Consumer Reports reveals the truth behind car waxes and weighs in on the products that outperform others — Black Magic and Turtle Wax.

Out of more than two dozen liquid, paste and spray car waxes, Black Magic Wet Shine Liquid Wax and Turtle Wax Carnauba Car Wax T-6 tied with “excellent” overall scores. Both products sell nationally for around $7 a piece.

A total of 28 different brands of car wax were tested, including 16 liquid waxes, five pastes, and seven spray-on, wipe-off products. The waxes ranged in price from about $5 to $32.

Consumer Reports found that the liquid waxes generally provide the best combination of cleaning and protection. But contrary to conventional wisdom, they required more effort than paste waxes to apply and remove. As a group, liquids were the hardest to apply evenly, and they took the most time to buff out.

Some also left a powdery residue that had to be wiped off. Even the top-rated Black Magic Liquid Wet Shine Liquid Wax required an extra bit of buffing to eliminate any streaking. The other best all-around choice, Turtle Wax Carnauba Car Wax T-6, can cause slight scratching or hazing on newer dark-colored finishes.

What about pricier waxes favored by auto enthusiasts? They don't necessarily work better than some less-expensive brands. The two top performers cost just $7, while a product selling for $32, P21S Concours-Look Carnauba Wax, ranked no better than mid-pack.

Among the four paste waxes tested, the Nu Finish NFP-80 ($8) outscored its competitors with a “Very Good” score. Tied for the best spray product was Eagle One Wax-As-You-Dry ($6) and Turtle Wax 1 Step Wax & Dry T-9 ($6), both with a "good" score. Turtle Wax Platinum Series Ultra Gloss T-413R came in just behind the two top-rated sprays.

How to Select the Right Car Wax

* Liquid waxes are good for cleaning, gloss, and durability. But they can be more difficult to apply evenly and buff out. Most dry to a haze within about a minute, but this varies with wind, sunlight, and thickness of application.

* Paste waxes are good for easy application. Overall performance is not as good as with liquids. It can be difficult to remove wax from the container as you near the bottom. Paste waxes usually dry to a haze within 30 seconds.

* Spray waxes are good for new cars with excellent finishes since new paint is still shiny and shouldn’t be oxidized. They are also good for consumers looking for convenience, plastic compatibility, and spot waxing. They are quick to apply and many can be wiped off without drying. But they are not as good for cleaning and are the worst for durability.

How car waxes are tested
Overall scores for the waxes are based primarily on gloss; durability; ease of use; cleaning; resistance to scratching, swirls and hazing; and plastic compatibility.

Consumer Reports tested using sample panels uniformly finished with white or black automotive paint, both with and without clear coat. Some were left to weather for 12 months on the roof of CR’s National Test Center in Yonkers, NY and others were put into a device that simulates extreme weather conditions. The panels were brought into a lab weekly, where technicians washed and dried them, and applied drops of water to measure beading effect. How well a wax causes water to bead, or repel water, is one way to determine whether wax still provides protection from acid rain and contaminants. To test for ease of use and how well products worked to clean and improve gloss on fading paint, CR used real vehicles, some of which had rarely or never been waxed.

To assess gloss, CR did side-by-side visual comparisons. For durability tests, CR tracked how the water beaded to show how quickly the wax wore away. Cleaning and scratching-hazing tests also relied on side-by-side visual comparisons. For ease of use, CR used cars owned by staffers.

2009 Pontiac GTO, unknown author

Pontiac GTO was a spin off from the Australian arm of GM, Holden, which sold a coupe domestically called the Monaro. As Holden is the last bastian of rear wheel drive in the GM empire, attention was focused on the Monaro and it was decided that the car could be brought into the US as the new GTO. A few changes were made, most notably the fuel tank was relocated which ate into trunk space, and the nose was redesigned for a Pontiac look.

But like the Monaro the GTO never really took off. Once everyone who wanted a big coupe had bought one, demand fell way off and the car was discontinued in 2006, when production of the Monaro was stopped. The GTO was also criticized for lacking visual aggression, which didn’t help sales.

Pontiac shifted just 36,427 GTOs over three years when the company had expected 54,000. At one point, due to proposed CAFE standards, the new GTO was almost cancelled, but the GTO’s future is assured, by none other than Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice President.

The new GTO will appear next year, along with the Chevrolet Camaro. As before, the chassis will be from Holden, but this time it’s the new Zeta platform, which debuted in the Australian VE Commodore. The Camaro will also use the Zeta platform, which is exceptionally stiff, which bodes well for handling, Certainly the Holden products drive very well.

The 2009 Pontiac GTO should be available with an entry level 261 horsepower 3.6 liter DOHC V6 and a full on 362 horsepower LS2 6.0 liter V8, the same engines that are available in the Pontiac G8.

One thing’s for sure, the 2009 Pontiac GTO will have much more aggressive styling than the previous model, to emphasize the cars sporty and muscular nature. And thanks to the Zeta platform suspension handling should match the image. Suspension at the front is MacPherson strut, and at the rear is a ‘proper’ multi link suspension rather than the primitive semi trailing arm suspension of the previous GTO. The wheelbase is also longer, giving the car a more stable ride, while the overhangs have been shortened, which should give the car a very sporty look.

There’s some question over whether the car will be built by Holden and exported to the US or whether it will be built in the US. The GTO is being developed in Australia because of Holden’s experience with the Zeta platform, but Bob Lutz says the final decision on the location of assembly will come down to the exchange rate between the Australian and American dollars. You can bet your bottom dollar that the UAW (United Auto Workers union) will be campaigning hard for the car to be built in the US.

An Interview with Sean

This interview was posted on the Performance Years website sometime in 2006, I think. It was forwarded to me by a friend.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ULTIMATEGTO.COM'S SEAN MATTINGLY
by Keith MacDonald

If you own a GTO, or any other Pontiac for that matter, you have probably
spent a little time at Sean Mattingly's UltimateGTO.com website. It
currently boasts the world's largest photo collection of A-body Pontiacs in
the world. If you've ever wondered how Sean does what he does and still has
time to make a living, read on.

A.) Sean, everyone on the planet knows you're the consummate GTO freak, but
tell me about the "Behind the Scenes Sean"? Where do you work?

I am a part-time DJ on a classic rock radio station. However, my main job is
being the sole electronics tech for a group of seven radio stations. It's
just me, totally responsible for the upkeep on 10 transmitters, 70
computers, 11 studios and several buildings. They call me the "Director Of
Technical Operations". I think we've got about 1,500 gadgets plugged in the
wall. Everything has to keep working 24 hours a day or I get paged
mercilessly!

B.) I've heard you have to be there very early in the morning.

Naw, who wants to get up early? I figured out how to make the audio
automation computer playback my morning show. So I get to record my Sunday
morning show in the evening if I want to. With "voice tracking", I can do a
3-hour show in about 40 minutes.

C.) Do you have kids?

My wife and I decided on having show dogs and show cars instead. She travels
all over the midwest, showing Miniature Pinschers and Whippets.

D.) The Ultimate GTO website must require a huge commitment. Do you have
time for other hobbies? Interests? Sports? NASCAR?

I collect old Burger Chef memorabilia from the 1960's. So I guess you could
say that my hobby is buying crap I don't need on ebay. This summer I got the
idea to visit all 22 operating drive-in movie theaters in Indiana. Every
week I visit a different one and take photos for UltimateGTO.com. I've
gotten to see some other interesting GTOs on my tour, and hang out with some
good car people under the stars.

E.) Can you give us a little history of your site? When did you start it?

UltimateGTO.com started in 1996 as a hobby. I was looking for a GTO to
replace one that a drunk driver crashed into. The first three years I was
mostly collecting and posting GTO photos and info as I shopped for a '68 GTO
on the internet. Then I found a nice '68 GTO from a nice lady in Alabama. I
still have that car.

F.) How many website visits do you get now?

Today the website is the largest and most-visited GTO site with over 12
million hits each month. It also hosts a GTO Email List as a service to 350
subscribed members who get daily GTO tech messages in their inboxes.

G.) But how did you conceive the idea? And the 'Ultimate GTO' name?

I originally just wanted to make a photo gallery. But it got much bigger
than that with tech articles and car owner's stories. Early on, I made a
multi-page written plan to grow the website to gigantic proportions. So far
it's working. People say that the "Ultimate" name fits the website, I agree.

H.) What do you see as your site's specialty, the owner photos, the info, or
the discussions?

My site has all that. The owner photos are most overwhelming with
about 13,000 photos of all years of GTOs from 1964 to 2006 and some concept
cars. Each photo is indexed in a searchable database called the "Advanced
Picture Searcher". If someone wants to see a photo of just an engine, say
1969 engines only, there are 212 photos of just that. Or if they want to
search out all the convertible photos, there are 2,507 of those that can be
called up - instantly sorted into 126 thumbnailed pages for easy viewing. Or
if someone wants to see just 2004, 2005 and 2006 GTOs they'd find 1,331
photos complete with stories from their proud owners. One guy with a 2005
GTO sent in 8 photos of his Midnight Blue car in Ohio. He had installed a
trailer hitch on it. It pulls a tiny two-person trailer.

I.) I noticed you have 'Live Chat' right at the website. Any action there?
Or is it mostly random visitors?

It is a random selection of people discussing the newer GTOs. I made a
little place for people to chat without having to hassle with registrations
or creating accounts. It's not as structured as a typical message board.
There are some interesting Australians that hang out on there, telling
people about their experiences with Monaros and living "down under".

J.) What is it about GTO owners that make them want to form a community and
connect with each other?

Mostly it's people looking for restoration/performance information or parts.
Then there are guys that have just pushed the kids off to college and
they're shopping for a car like the one they've always wanted. I'm seeing
more and more emails from people wanting to know what the next generation of
GTOs might look like. I show them this knockout concept drawing from
independent designer Larry Williams...
http://ultimategto.com/pow/pow0450.jpg That's what I'm hoping the GM design
studio does for GTO fans. We can only hope!

K.) Do you feel a sense of competition with other GTO enthusiast sites, or
is there more of a cooperative atmosphere?

Are there other GTO websites out there? Ha ha. I do know that my website has
a loyal following of people who check it every single day for new photos.
They are rewarded with about 160 new photos each month. Viewers can leave
comments on photos and vote on their favorites so that keeps the audience
coming back to see the rankings. The emphasis of my main page is on "What's
New" so you don't have to dig around to find new content.

L.) I've seen your white '68 GTO at the '04 and '06 GTOAA Nats. Tell us
about it?

I have a white '68 GTO hardtop with Cragar wheels and a hood tach. At the
'06 GTOAA Nationals in Louisville, I got to meet a bunch of website visitors
face-to-face. They appreciate the website a lot. Since my photo appears on
the main page of UltimateGTO.com - people I don't know will greet me by
name. That's hard to get used to, but fun! This year the GTOAA Nats had a
large number of 2004 - 2006 GTO owners in attendance. We'll be seeing more
of them in the years to come because the classic GTO fans are wisely opening
up their shows to the newer cars.

M.) What other GTO sites do you frequent?

I really like the "Performance Years" message forums. The PY Forums cover a
lot of ground in the Pontiac world.

N.) Any others?

I like to browse the "GTO" and drifting videos on Youtube.com

O.) Have you ever had any weirdos? You know, people who were haunting the
website? Or maybe some 'get a lifer' who kept emailing you angry letters
about technical mistakes on the site?

I get the occasional weirdo (you Keith) who wants everyone to paint his or
her car Sundance Orange. Other than that, people will leave a positive
comment about individual GTO photos they like. Man, you ought to see the
"unsuitable" comments! These are from haters and psychos and people who
can't even spell the word Pontiac. While deleting their evil ramblings, I
find them entertaining as hell. A couple years ago, I started posting those
"unsuitable" comments too (minus the photos they reference) in the
"unsuitable" comments area. It's all good. No other website is doing that.

P.) When Sean Mattingly turns 85 and needs a visiting day nurse, who takes
over at UltimateGTO? Have you ever thought about selling the website?

All I can say is that a major automotive company has offered seven figures
for it. I have NO interest in selling it though. If I did, I'd regret it -
like the guys that sell their cars and then spend the rest of their lives
searching the country to get it back. It's my biggest hobby. I can't sell it
off.

Q.) Have you ever thought about quitting the day job and utilizing the
benefits of the heavy Web traffic?

What? ...and lose all the perks of being a DJ? Free concert tickets! Free
food, free t-shirts, driving a radio logo van with 3-foot tall speakers, the
horny groupies! Just kidding, I should be selling obnoxious flashing banner
ads all over the UltimateGTO.com website like some other sites? My
advertising rates are right here. http://ultimategto.com/bannerad.htm

R.) OK... You have a ton of '72 convertibles on the website, but where is
the true singly-produced '72 GTO convertible located?

Keep looking. As of today, I have 149 pictures of 1972 convertibles. Not one
of those is a true GTO convertible.

S.) What GTO photo on your website makes you cry? IOW, is there a GTO that
someone hacked so badly that you are still in shock over it?What's the link
for that photo?

There is this super nice '69 Liberty Blue Judge in my "Frame-Off Restoration
Gallery" section. After Sal Mola got his car done (53 restoration photos
with captions), some old lady pulled out in front of it and it got totaled.
Here is one gory aftermath photo: http://ultimategto.com/pow/pow0001a.jpg

T.) The GTO photos with women, or "GTO Girls" seem to be the most popular
photos. Would you ever market "PG-rated" GTO Girl photos to help support the
site?

Hmmm. Very interesting idea. Maybe I should start getting model release
forms for that. People often send me pics of their hot girlfriends with
their cars. So far, I've got 120 pics of girls with cars. Find them with my
"Advanced Picture Searcher" on the main menu.

U.) Any plans to expand to F-bodys or the larger Ponchos?

Hold that until I get a photo of every single GTO ever produced.

V.) Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions for the PY guys.
While you have their attention, is there anything you'd like to tell them?

If you're shopping for GTO parts on eBay, you're missing out on some items,
and wasting your time sorting through others. Try my GTO Parts Quick-Links
page. It is organized by year and parts names particular to the GTO, not
Ferrari GTOs or "GTO" garage door openers. Keith pointed out that some
people can't spell "Pontiac" in their eBay listings. So I added a link there
to 67 misspellings of "Pontiac" so you can nab some GTO parts you'd
otherwise miss! Try this: http://ultimategto.com/gtomerchlist.htm

What GTO are you looking for?

It is interesting to work behind the scenes at the world's largest Pontiac GTO oriented website. I keep an automatic log of what made people land onto the UltimateGTO.com site. The log mostly shows what car terms that people were searching for on search engines. Here, have a look at that (sometimes funny) data and I'll explain some of the log entries along the way...

It is amusing to me when people put a URL they already know into a search engine to "search" and show them what they already know. My brother does that for every URL he knows, every time. So I showed him how to enter a URL into the "URL" box at the top of his Internet Explorer browser program. Just type it in the box and hit enter. Easy.

Looking at the IP address, this Google search was conducted from somewhere near Stockholm, Sweden. The search results showed them a photo of a car repair shop that's in Sweden. Camaroskroten in Swedish means "camaro junk yard". Here is the photo in question: http://ultimategto.com/cgi-bin/showcar.cgi?type=lot&pic=/1969jud/69j_00145_2

Google led them to pics of me sanding my '68 GTO front bumper.

PAGEwMENU|Sat Jan 26 21:09:55 2008|69.72.125.201|Google|wrecked crane pictures
Ha ha! This was a wrecked GTO with a Crane brand cam in it. It was not a "wrecked crane" as they had hoped. Close, but no cigar!

The answer is "no". But they got to see the GTO that Vin did drive in his xXx action movie.

PAGEwMENU|Sat Jan 26 21:21:04 2008|70.58.80.174|Google|gto xm radio
That search led to the page where I ranted against XM radio in general. I work for a local (free) radio station and was encouraging people to listen to free local radio rather than XM (paid) radio.

It was a guy's name AND a paint color. Who knew?

PAGEwMENU|Sat Jan 26 22:05:00 2008|67.85.118.86|Google|classic pontiac gto's for sale in nj
They discovered the "GTO's For Sale List" which I email to people for the asking.

What GTO are you looking for? Happy searching!

This Is You!

If you are visiting this website called UltimateGTO.com on a regular basis, I feel that I know a lot about you. This is not a comedy piece. This is research gathered from visitor polls conducted over the years.

What you own:
  • You have a classic GTO, store it indoors, and don't drive it daily.
  • You own at least one piece of clothing that says "GTO" on it.
  • You own at least one diecast version of a GTO.
  • Your secondary car is a Pontiac or a Chevy or a Ford truck.
How you think:
  • You think your garage is too small.
  • You think it is allright to give car parts as Christmas gifts.
  • You think you are a good driver.
How you act:
  • If given the choice, you would not drive a GTO in the snow.
  • You're a fan of High Performance Pontiac magazine.
  • If there was a GTO-only museum, you'd visit there on vacation.
  • You can spot a GTO if one appears in a movie.
What you've done:
  • As a kid, you made some car drawings or assembled car model kits.
  • You're less than 61 years old.
  • You can tell a good story or two about roadside breakdowns.
What you might buy:
  • You very much like to look at cars or parts that are for sale.
  • You would not buy a 4-door GTO if GM ever made one.
  • You would avoid buying a new car that was made in China.
The Ultimate GTO Picture Site website has been running since 1996, so I've met up with a lot of visitors. "You" have been filling out poll questions on the main page of http://UltimateGTO.com weekly for several years. Did I accurately describe "you"? Seems like we've met before! Feel free to leave some feedback in the "comments" link below.
